Can I use IP23 Light Fixtures Outdoors?

Lighting products rated IP23 are suitable for use outdoors; however, it is only recommend that lights with an IP23 rating be installed in a sheltered location. An IP23 product is protected against projections of water falling at up to 60 degrees from the vertical.

Country-Specific Requirements for Outdoor Lighting: 

Ireland, the EU, and the UK

  • Minimum Recommended Rating: IP44 for general outdoor use.
  • Exposed Areas: IP65 or higher for areas directly exposed to the elements.

United States and Canada

  • Environmental Ratings:
    • Dry Locations: Not suitable for outdoor use. 
    • Damp Locations: Suitable for covered outdoor areas, such as porches. 
    • Wet Locations: Required for lights directly exposed to weather conditions.
      Equivalent to IP Ratings: IP44 for damp locations, IP65 or higher for wet locations.

Australia and New Zealand: 

  • Minimum Recommended Rating: IP44 for outdoor use. 
  • Exposed Areas: IP65 or higher for areas subject to heavy rain or direct exposure to water.
